Moong Dal Rasam
posted in Uncategorized |In our South Indian meals, usually along with some dal and curry, even pulusu (some liquid) is also a must. So, a variety of liquid based dishes like rasam, sambar, theepi pulusu, pachi pulusu and many others are prepared.
Here is the recipe for Pesara pappu pulusu (Moong dal rasam).
Ingredients:
1 cup moong dal (pesara pappu)
1 big onion chopped
2 red chillies
1 green chilli
lemon sized tamarind
1 tsp mustard seeds
pinch of hing (asafoetida,inguva)
pinch of turmeric
few curry leaves
salt to taste

Preparation:
- Boil the moong dal and keep aside.
- Soak the tamarind in warm water and keep aside for few minutes.
- Squeeze the juice from it and make two cups of diluted tamarind water from it.
Procedure:
- Firstly do the popu in a skillet with mustard seeds,red chillies,green chilli,curry leaves and hing.
- Saute the onions for few minutes, till they are soft .
- Add a pinch of turmeric and saute well.
- Stir in the diluted tamarind water and add salt.
- Let it boil for some time for about ten minutes.
- Add the boiled moong dal , stir well and boil for another five minutes and put off the stove.

It goes very well with rice.
