Bottle gourd Dal (Anapakaya pappu )

Recipe for Anapakaya Pappu:

Ingredients:
Bottle gourd- 1 ( medium size )
Mung dal- 1 cup
Pinch of turmeric
Salt to taste

For Seasoning:
Mustard- 1 tsp
Cumin- 1 tsp
Red chillies- 2
Asafoetida- 1/4th tsp ( optional )
Urad dal- 1 tsp
Curry leaves- 10

Procedure:

  • Peel the skin of the bottle gourd and chop it to small pieces.
  • Add a pinch of turmeric and bring them to boil.
  • In a separate bowl, add little salt to the mung dal and boil it.
  • In a wide skillet, add a spoon of oil and do the seasoning, in the order listed above.
  • Once the popping sound is heard, add the boiled bottle gourd pieces and mung dal.
  • Adjust the salt, to your taste and stir well.

Serve the dal either with rotis or steamed rice and a papad.
It is a very good accompaniment for both rice and rotis.
